Protecting Your Well and Septic System

July 7, 2015 by admin Leave a Comment

IMG_1292Most PA horse properties are serviced not by city water and sewage systems, but by individual wells and septic systems. These systems take some special care and management, and if you have horses or other livestock, you should take certain measures to make sure your well doesn’t become contaminated and your septic system stays functioning at its best.

In a short video clip recently posted to thehorse.com, expert Alayne Blickle explained how horse property owners can protect their wells and septic systems from horse-related damage.

If your PA horse farm has an on-site well, it’s important to keep livestock and chemicals away from the well head. While experts recommend that animals and toxic materials be kept at least 100 feet from wells, Blickle advised that a 25 foot grassy radius around the well can be sufficient to keep contaminants like manure and chemicals (gasoline, weed killer, etc.) out of your water supply.

Septic systems can also be damaged by livestock. It’s important to keep horses and heavy objects, like tractors or other farm machinery, off of your drain field or sand mound. The excess weight can compact the soil, preventing the microbes underground from being able to do their job, and resulting in a septic system failure. Fence off your septic field or sand mound, and keep heavy equipment in a different area to protect the integrity of the system.

A little knowledge can save you a lot of worry and expense when it comes to your PA horse farm’s well and septic system! Being careful to keep horses, livestock, chemicals, and heavy objects away from the well head and drain field or sand mound will go a long way towards keeping your systems in good working condition.
