Penn State Extension Presents Parasite Lecture Series

December 29, 2014 by admin Leave a Comment

Penn State Extension Presents Parasite Lecture SeriesHorse and farm owners in Eastern PA are well-acquainted with the dangers and annoyances of the parasites that can plague our equine friends. From intestinal worms and biting flies, to mosquitoes, to ticks, parasites can be a serious problem. They spread disease, make horses sick, and are an overall nuisance.

Learn To Control Parasites

This lecture series presented by the Penn State Extension will give attendees valuable information on how to control parasites through farm management as well as through sound veterinary practices. Participants will hear from industry experts and veterinarians on several topics, including pasture management, fecal testing, and manure composting.

And no matter where you’re located in Eastern PA, the seminar will be given at a location near you. The lecture series will be held on January 17th in Lancaster, PA, February 7th in Bethlehem, PA, February 21st in Mill Hall, PA, and February 28th in Prospect, PA.

To register for this great educational event, you can visit the Penn State Extension website: http://extension.psu.edu/animals/equine/events/managing-parasite-on-equine-operations-a-whole-farm-approach. Participants must register within a week of the seminar, and the cost is $45 per person. This includes lunch and all lecture materials.

Participate In A Penn State Research Project

Attendees will also have the opportunity to be a part of a year-long parasite research project. Those who participate in the project will learn to conduct fecal egg counts for their own horses, and learn which deworming products are effective, and which aren’t helping. The will receive individualized assistance in creating a parasite management plan for their particular farm, and discover which horses are naturally resistant to intestinal worms, and which shed eggs.

This lecture series is a must for horse and farm owners in Eastern PA. Equine parasites affect all horses, and taking preventative steps to control them can help keep your horses healthy throughout their lives.
