No stranger to the international-level endurance riding scene, local equestrian Holly Corcoran is always looking for new opportunities to ride and compete overseas. So when fellow rider Valerie Kanavy offered her the chance to compete in Brazil in her stead, Holly quickly accepted the offer and got started getting ready for her journey to South America.
A Last-Minute Trip To Brazil
While it was a very last-minute trip, everything came together perfectly – from getting a visa to booking a flight – and soon Holly was on her way to Brasilia.
Gracious Brazilian riders Nick and Vitoria Lins Filho provided a horse for Holly to ride in exchange for the use of one of her horses at a U.S. competition a few months later. They also served as her hosts and guides through Brazil. For the 160 kilometer ride, Holly was mounted on an Arabian mare from the Lins’ own farm, NNL Just For You.
An Unexpected Setback
Unfortunately for Holly, despite getting a good start, she had to retire after the first 140 km of the race due to severe dehydration. While she made her best effort to recover and continue the ride, she knew her body was not up to finishing the race, and Holly was taken back to her hotel after receiving IV fluids. Thankfully, she was able to recover fully and was back to feeling herself the next day.
Despite not being able to complete the ride, Holly was able to make strong connections with South American riders, and get a look into how they care for and manage their competition horses. She will be back next year for the Brazilian competition, and aims to finish the ride!
Holly Corcoran Competes For A Spot On the 2015 Pan Am Endurance Team
Holly also has her sights set on the 2015 Pan American Endurance Championships, to be held this August in Ontario, Canada. The Endurance Championships will correspond with the Pan American Games held in Toronto. She’ll have to attain qualifying scores at several international-level endurance competitions to make the team, as well as perform well enough at the Selection Trials on May 1st, 2015 in order to make the cut. Holly will be competing against the best endurance riders in the country for a spot on the PanAm team, so she’ll need to be at the top of her game. She’ll spend the next few months getting herself and her horses fit for the Selection Trials.
We wish Holly the best of luck on her journey to the Pan American Endurance Championships!
