Eastern PA has a large and vibrant equestrian community, but all of the wonderful events, organizations, and shows that we enjoy in our area are made possible by the people who volunteer to help make them happen. Without volunteers, Eastern PA equestrians would have very few shows to attend! If you’re interested in giving back to the horse community in your area, here are some ideas of how to volunteer:
Volunteer at, or organize, a trail clean-up day. There are so many places in Eastern PA to trail ride, but someone’s got to maintain those trails to keep them clear and safe for riders, hikers, and bikers. Take a day to help maintain your local trail system by removing fallen logs and branches, clearing trails of rocks, and trimming back underbrush.
Volunteer at a horse show. Volunteers are always needed to manage the in-gate, collect scores, work in the show office, and set jump courses. Competitions can’t be run without a slew of volunteer manpower! Contact your local horse park or show association to see where and when help is needed.
Horse rescues are always in need of volunteers to care for the animals. Horses, as we all know, are a lot of work, and those that need rehabilitation or specialized veterinary care are even more time-consuming to care for, making volunteers essential for rescue groups.
Therapeutic riding centers also thrive on volunteer support. From people to feed horses and clean stalls to volunteers to lead horses during riding lessons, the good work that therapeutic riding organizations do could not happen without volunteers.
If you’re short on time but still want to help out your local horse community, consider making a donation to an equine charity organization or rescue. Therapeutic riding centers and horse rescues often seek donations of equipment, feed, and stable supplies. Horse shows and horse parks often have opportunities for giving, too. Advertise your business in a show program, sponsor a class, or donate a prize. Right now, Bucks County Horse Park is seeking donors to sponsor new jumps for their show jumping ring.
Whether you decide to volunteer at a horse show, feed horses at a rescue, clean up the trails, or donate money or equipment to a worthy cause, there are plenty of ways to contribute to the Eastern PA equestrian community!
